As of September 27th, 2021, fines will no longer accrue on children’s books!
Traditionally, when an item is checked out from the library it is has a due date that is dependent on what kind of item it is. Once the due date is passed, fines begin to accrue. Once it has been more than a month late, a bill is issued for a replacement cost. As more libraries go fine free, studies have shown that there fines have little to no impact on a person’s decision to return an item on time, but can act as a barrier to library usage. Therefore, in an effort to remove barriers for children to use the library and promote early literacy, the library has gone Fine Free for children’s books. However, if an item isn’t returned after a month, the traditional bill will still be issued. This does not impact the library’s finances, as the Friends of the Library have fundraised to make up the small difference this amount is (less than one percent of one percent of the library’s budget).
